This is one of my favorite annual topics!
The really funny thing here is that Santa Claus, flying reindeer, decorated evergreen trees and giving gifts to children are all elements of an ancient pagan festival celebrated around the Winter Solstice, long predating the advent of Christianity.
There really is nothing "Christian" about "Christmas" save only the word. Indeed, the Christian Church invented Jesus' birthday and chose that particular date as way to subvert the ancient pagan festival. Irony of ironies, the ancient pagan festival seems to be outliving the Christian re-naming of it.
The actual Christian holy-day of Christmas of course was never listed as even a significant feast-day on any historical religious calendars before the 19th century. Celebration of Christmas pretty much begins in 19th century Victorian England (centered around the fat-guy with the white beard, though his suit was blue back then).
Thus, there is more 'political correctness' here stacked on top of political correctness than you might expect. Certainly to say "happy holidays" is politically correct in a contemporary sense, but even to say "merry Christmas" is to engage in Christian political correctness.
I do find the dispute to be very interesting and highly indicative of the culture war cleavages. The ironies are just bonus!
