In fact, I could even counter that by arguing that if Christianity DID move past its more historically damaging aspects, many would say it sold out to modernism. After all, fundamentalism is a stalwart antithesis of progressivity. The hardcore Islamic World likes to pretend it's still 1160, and there are more than a few fundamentalist Christians who espouse a similar regressiveness. Fun part is, we have Christians condemning each other as being not TRULY Christians. I've been flat-out informed that Catholics are not Christian, if you can believe that. So, for any Christian to deem Islam as incompatible with modernity is a little disingenuous.

Sorry it's a bit late. Here's the actual information. It's correlational, so I am not saying religion causes any of the problems. I do believe it's true in some of the cases, but in others, it merely proves that religion doesn't have all the beneficial consequences people think it does. It also proves that a secular society isn't necessarily worse; it can often be better.
Societies worse off 'when they have God on their side' - Times Online Skeptic: The Magazine: Featured Article Here is the actual study: moses.creighton.edu/JRS/2005/2005-11.htm Apparently, the site keeps timing out for me. Maybe it will be back up tomorrow. That's irritating.

The UK already recognizes Sharia Law in some cases. Just two examples: BBC NEWS | UK | The view from inside a Sharia court BBC NEWS | UK | Sharia law 'could have UK role' Their Muslim population is far greater than ours, of course. The US is so thoroughly Christian, however (despite the "separation of church and state" rhetoric), that short of total conquest by an Islamic state, I can't see such a concession ever happening here. I don't think the question is whether religion X Y or Z is compatible...but whether extremism is.
Extremists, regardless of the type, are not usually compatible with our society. They're not interested in compromise and understanding. They know who is right (them), and anyone who disagrees with them is wrong. Period. |
