Smile Chicken or the Egg?

Well, it's been mentioned, might as well bring it up.

Which came first, chicken or the egg?

Being a farmer, I know the answer. Neither. It had to be two chickens, because even if the egg were magically fertilized (or divinely, but that would mean chickens are part God:wacko, even if it were fertilized it would be unable to reproduce. However, two chickens could reproduce.

The egg, from an evolutionary standpoint, came first, because eggs as a reproductive mechanism were around far before chickens as a species, or even birds.

Of course the egg came first, why you think they are called chickens.

The egg came first, because a not-quite chicken laid an egg which had a genetic mutation, and the hatchling became the first chicken.

I never knew that...about chicken being a generic term. You do learn something new every day.

Do I spy an almost direct quote from me there zephyr?
I believe I wrote
Quote:
The not-quite-chicken hatched an egg which had a genetic "defect" or difference in it which made it a chicken, no question.
But you are 100% correct.
