Those passing by the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino might wonder what all the fuss was about Wednesday when Seneca Gaming Corp. announced it was shutting down construction of the casino as well as the expanded hotel at Seneca Allegany Casino and Hotel.

As many, if not more, construction workers were at the site east of HSBC Arena today as there were the day before, still erecting the steel superstructure, pouring concrete and digging new trenches.

Seneca Gaming spokesman Philip J. Pantano said the workers are shutting the site down, but that it will take some time.

Of course, one wonders if the Senecas simply bit off more than they could chew:

"This is a prudent business decision in light of down market conditions nationwide in the casino and gaming industry," he said. "The choice to suspend, discussed for some time, is a pro-active way to maintain the corporation's sterling bond rating."
