Statistically it is more dangerous. If 40% of accidents involve drinking, there is another number that you need to know, what % of drivers out there at any given time are drunk, maybe 1% during the day and as high as 15% on weekend nights. Unless the actual number of drunks drivers is over 40% on average, then drunk drivers commit more than their share of accidents, making it less safe.
Otherwise, by your logic, 4.4% of deaths in 2002 were from falls and other accidents (including car crashes), while 1.3% were from suicide. So that makes suicide safer than driving in a car or standing on a ladder, doesn't it.
