I don't know what it is like now, but it was NOT rich people town back then. The property taxes were so high because of state fiscal irresponsibility which included generous welfare programs and the state using a high amount of tax money to help prop up a spendthrift NYC. If NYC weren't perpetually supported by the other NY state taxpayers, it would have had to declare bankruptcy long ago.
