I'd support it so long as full safety measures are taken, like making it a field trip to an actual shooting range, rather than just propping up targets out on the football field and saying "go for it!"

So in other words, you support it so long as it cannot possibly be done large-scale.

You can stop a .22LR round with very little effort, like say, lining a portable classroom with a strip of sheet metal. You're operating on the "protect our kids" model that has clearly failed when you should be operating on the "prepare our kids" model.

I think it's a brilliant idea. It's exactly what education is all about. It should be wholeheartedly endorsed by the school board.

This is an excellent reason to teach marksmanship in school. Then if some parents disagree, their children can do something else, like shoot baskets or run around the track.
It should be an elective, I think, not a default class.

I would say default in. Parents can drop out if they want.

I think gym should also be an elective. Firearms should definitely be an elective, too. Another problem with it is that it isn't possible for every school to do this. Would there be field trips to firing ranges? How much would that cost?
Also, it could potentially be dangerous to have a bunch of 10 or 11 year old kids playing around with guns.

I believe every school has a gym with some modifications that could be suitable. As was noted earlier the youngest children would be using air rifles, not very dangerous to begin with and the instructor would be a retired military or law enforcement officer (a few other things would work as well).
They would not be "playing around with guns" if you read the point is safety and training.
