How did you get away?
I've never been robbed by a stranger, but by a person I knew. So I wouldn't have shot him, just dismiss him from my life, as I did. I might shoot a bad guy in the knee if I had a gun handy, I wouldn't want to kill anyone. But since I never have a gun handy, this is all storytelling.

I have to say I'd just want the mugger to go away. He would have had the jump on me and armed or not I would be in a very difficult position. I just hope I wouldn't lose it and shoot him in the back when he was rushing off though.

Well, there ya go, at least I'm not the only one.
Even if I had wanted to at the time, it would have been impossible for me to shoot my assailants. It was very, very illegal for my collegues and I to possess or carry firearm. A big rock woulda been nice though.

You know the cliche "it all happened so fast?" True.
What I think happened is that a car rolled to a stop behind my assailaints and they got a little nervous, letting go of my belt and my pocket, giving me the chance to bolt. Then the couple in the car picked me up at a corner and drove me back to my hotel. No harm done, and a little wiser. I don't know the gun laws in Ecuador, but even if it were legal I wouldn't be carrying a gun, and have no intention of shooting anybody over my wallet.

In Austin, like the rest of Texas carrying a concealed weapon is not only legal it's encouraged. Hell, even in the hippy heaven of Austin it's practically required if you want to call yourself a 'real' Texan. For the record, I don't carry, but I do own.
