A lot of vets started smoking during their war years. We were given free cigarettes in our c-rats and cartons by the Red Cross in the field. You get cartons at the base PX if you were ever in from the field.

The VA is good about providing patches, and counciling for smokers I understand.

Thanks for the concern. Nobody to blame but myself. I am lucky to not have cancer.

I keep a fan running on me most of the time and that helps. Sleep on two pillows and lean my head back to keep my airway open good, I have that obstructed airway from when they jammed the air tube down my neck during my operation. But yeah, I am really in good condition for all the problems I have from smoking.

Smoking is like sky diving. It's fun until the shute doesn't open.

Shintao:

I am also sorry to hear about your condition. I've been doing too many things at once and popping on and off of this thread to notice your personal motivation for posting this thread. Best wishes.

Ah, yes, an attack thread on yet another politically incorrect group!

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

Apparently you either didn't read or didn't understand the OP of this thread. It is for people who want to quit. It's not trying to force anything on anyone, only providing help for those that want it. Do you have something against that?

Well, given how smoking is considered politically incorrect in certain countries (like the United States), the original poster's motivation for the thread is automatically suspect (yes, I read and understood the original post) - especially when "stop smoking" is put in the title in all capital letters with multiple exclamation points.

The original post operates under the assumption that smoking is evil and that it is something to be overcome.

But, go ahead and have your little Tobaccoholics Anonymous club.

Smoking is hardly politically incorrect, as seeing how much it is used in movies and in the states. What it is considered is unhealthy, and anyone that wants to quit smoking should be allowed to get help from others and offer help to others.

I only had a 2 year/2 packs per day habit. Not sure if that qualifies as a true addiction, but I quit smoking, drinking and....um....misc. in one day, basically on force of will.

The mind is a powerful thing, and I can't help thinking that all the drugs, hypnosis, therapy and what not is just expensive window dressing for the basic fact that one has to want to quit, 100%, or it's just not going to happen.

The way I view(ed) it, the acts of smoking, drinking and ________ is completely voluntary, involving conscious points of decisionmaking and physical actions. Ciggies don't spring to your mouth pre-lit. You have to order/buy liquor and physically drink it.

Not saying that's going to work for anyone else, but that's how I approached it. I simply refused to give in to the idea/excuse that it was anything but completely within my control. I found that I can't "wean" myself...I have to go cold turkey or it's just not going to happen.
