Its nothing personal here buddy, but I have asked the moderator to remove a bunch of off-topic posts. Please respect my wishes.

I used to think like you. I can say it was all excuses for my addiction, like any addiction. It took my grandfather from me. No more fishing, hiking with him. My brother died coughing his blood and guts out into the kitchen sink - from alcohol addiction. No more fishing and hiking with him. He claimed he didn't have a problem either. One of my Nam brothers across the street died an ugly lung cancerous death. Horriable to watch the slow suffering as cancer eats your insides out. I could save my brothers in Nam, but I couldn't save him. His family still suffers his loss, smoking cancer.

Your reason to quit is bigger than yourself. Your cheating your family of you. Your grand kids are going to miss having a grand father to take them places, like fishing. I cheated death several times in Nam. Thought I invinceable, spent 25 years walking iron in the sky, and smoking cigarettes. It took a heart attack to show me I wasn't the meanest MFer in the valley anymore.

Years later now, I still have trouble breathing with meds, because the nicotine ruined my lungs. But I feel better than I ever did during those two pack a days. The VA can help anyone quit. I don't tell you to quit here, just pointing out to those that want to quit what it is like to break the addictive barrier and become a survivor.

If you are hell bent on killing yourself, try to spend more quality time with your family members. Take them places and live it like you are going to be dead tomorrow. Like we did in Nam.

I just want to let everyone on this thread know that staff are talking about what to do with this thread, if we should delete off topic posts. In the meantime this is a warning to drop the Obama argument and get back on topic. If you really want to talk about that, start another thread. This thread was not created for that topic.

Here is handy java script tool if you have your own website or blog, that will help support quit smoking for you. It lists the day, time you started smoke free. It can even calculate how much you have saved not smoking. Just fill out the form and it makes the java script code for you to paste on your own site.

Code here. Stop Smoking QuitMeter - QuitMeter.com

Here is the code in use, I quickly made and slapped on a page. http://ssdi0.tripod.com/smokefree.html

Give me an f'ing break. There are warnings on every g.d. pack of cigarettes, that smoking is a guaranteed health risk. Anyone ignoring the fact, deserves what they get.
Let's talk about what this thread is really about.....addictions, and people willing to offer up excuses why they cannot exercise will power or control.
I am not sympathetic to smokers anymore than I would be to a heroin or crack addict.
I am an ex-cardiopulmonary tech, and I worked with patients who had been 2-3 pk/day smokers for 20-30 years. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema, carcinoma, restrictive lung disease, and chronic heart problems were typical.
Worse was a man, in for lung evaluation, (from the VA), who couldn't resist having a smoke through his tracheostomy....if that didn't send chills.

People dying from smoking cigarettes is a serious issue. People choosing death over life is beyond reasoning.

Geeze! We are fortunate to have you!!!

Then, might you be familar with the lung treatments I had following my heart operation? They used a nebulizer to give the medication into my lungs, three times daily. It made me cough, and I coughed up the bad stuff. Do you think the medication could have been Abuterol?? Or is there a medication as I described the coughing behavior?

What nedulizer medicine do you suppose that could be? Because it seemed to help me to see what was coming up from my lungs, and then watch the stuff get clearer and clearer. The treatment was 3 times a day, for 7 days.

Also, do you have any good advice for home treatment some of the smokers here might try? Thanks!!

Isuprel, Combivent, Albuterol, and Alupent, were some of the bronchodilators that we used and that were commonly prescribed.
You might also try percussion (chest physical therapy), angling yourself "downward" and beating on your chest and ribs with "cupped palms", which creates an "air pocket", which when applied to the chest wall "loosens" secretions which can be expectorated.

I'll check those and see if one is design as an exporant to cough up stuff.

I have COPD. I use the Albuterol, servent, and combivent. I am fortunate the VA buys my meds for me, because the inhalers are very expensive. I also have the nebulaizer and I have an oxygen making machine, and oxy bottles if I start getting short winded for any reason.

A person can find and buy most medical devices if you feel you need them. Ebay is a good place to look.

Oh yeah. I remember the vibrating lung idea. I had a plastic device that I blew out through. It had a ball inside like a whistle, and vibrated all the way down in my lungs, an like you say, it got a lot of stuff coucghed up.

Also mouth breathing with "pursed lips" changes the pressure gradient in the bronchial tubes, keeping them open for better air flow. Try that.
I'm sorry about your condition.

Well, my favorite uncle died of Emphasima-cancer due to smoking. He was a WWII vet. Back then, it was sexy like Clark Gable or Humphrey Bogart to smoke. I was still a kid when he died, but I have heard that they had to do a Tracheotomy on him, and he was so addicted that he smoked through the hole in his throat until he died.
