Considering population is supposed to be controlled by resources, predators, and disease, all of our "advancement" in medicine, commerce, cultivation, weapons, and manipulation of food species makes a person looking on from the outside wonder whether human "advancement" is all that it's cracked up to be.

You're probably right to question the good of advancement. But, it is a reality. Without it, and the unquestionable fact that population growth with or without "advancement" would have happened anyway. Misery and death would be more the norm than conversations concerning the social grievances of man. Advancement at least allows the survivors of daily hazards to have the chance for better lives.
