China to Register and Photograph All Internet Cafe Patrons

The thought that having the Olympics in China would open up the country to greater freedom gave a lot of liberty-loving people hope, and not all of it was unfounded. “The Chinese Government will continue to follow the opening-up policy and to facilitate the work of foreign media and journalists in China," assured Qin Gang, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry. In other areas, though, it appears that things are just as effed up as usual. The Australian reports that "by mid-December all internet cafés in the main 14 city districts must install cameras to record the identities of their web surfers, who must by law be 18 or over." With over 250 million internet users in China, the Cultural Law Enforcement Taskforce is going to have its hands full entering all those images and scanned identity cards into the national database.... ___________________________ Click here to read the rest. |
