Default Dutch Unveil "Whore Miles" Program

Dutch Unveil "Whore Miles" Program
by RS Davis
The Freedom Files

Hello Freedomphiles! So, in Holland, they are trying out a new scheme to move girls from prostitution to "legitimate" work. Dubbed "Whore Miles" by the Dutch media, it offers prostitutes credits for good behaviour, which can be traded in for designer clothes and furniture.

"For every step they take to get out of their trade, they'll get vouchers that they can cash in to go shopping. They will be assigned a coach, whose first job will be to help them muster enough courage to stand up for themselves and break free from the trade," says Veronique Beurskens, whose group is leading the impossible charge of ending prostitution.

But others don't think it is such a great idea. Metje Blaak from Red Thread, the Dutch Prostitutes' Union, commented, "This is fine if they actually want to move on to something else but some might not want to. At the end of the day, this is a step towards making street prostitution illegal, and what will happen to the women then?"

In Holland, if you are over eighteen, it is perfectly legal to be a prostitute, but it is not legal to organize the prostitution of another. In other words, Dutch prostitutes are all on their own. If you want to set up a system that will keep women and their customers safe, you're a criminal.

So then how is it legal for the prostitutes to have a union?

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

I'm obviously not an expert at Dutch law. I'm guessing from the context here. I'm guessing that it means that being a prostitute is legal, but being a pimp is not. The pimp, of course, would claim to "protect" the prostitutes, while he was really more of an extortionist.

I'm guessing that the law is intended - and interpreted - to protect prostitutes from pimps and prevent people from legally "recruiting" (pressuring?) people into the profession.

If women choose, on their own, to be prostitutes, and choose to organize themselves to protect one another (ie: union), that may be legal because they're doing it themselves rather than having a pimp do it.

So, if they decide to go back to prostitution, do they have to return the goods? Perhaps some enterprising ex-prostitute could start a second hand shop...

My point--this is a, well, silly idea.

Another question would be: At what point does the ex-prostitute stop receiving these credits? I imagine someone might be tempted to keep the credits (and thus free stuff) coming for as long as they can...

But what if the union organizers are not themselves prostitutes (the way union organizers in America often don't actually work in a particular industry)? Then it's someone else organizing them.
