Comic Escapes Thought Police
by RS Davis The Freedom Files ![]() Hello Freedomphiles! Do you remember the FF I wrote about the Italian comic that was facing five years in prison for "offending the honour of the sacred and inviolable person" of Pope Benedict XVI? She had said that "within twenty years the Pope will be where he ought to be, in Hell, tormented by great big poofter devils — and very active ones, not passive ones," and for that, she faced trial for violating the 1929 Lateran Treaty - signed by Benito Mussolini - which gives the same punishment for insulting the Pope as for insulting the Italian President. Well, if you've been thinking about canceling your trip to Italy, wait - it appears that Justice Minister Angelino Alfano has blocked the prosecution. Now, if you think that this is a victory for civil rights and freedom of speech, wait again - the reason Alfano gave for the decision was that he knows "the stature and capacity of the pope for forgiveness," rather than the fundamental right of free people to challenge anyone and anything. Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi (who I hear is an excellent quarterback for the inter-denominational football league) confirmed the quasi-theocracy by saying, "The Pope's authority is far too superior to be dented (by the comments) and, in his magnanimity, he considers the case closed." The Pope had no comment about the fundamental human right to freedom of thought and expression. In fairness, though, he was just a young Hitler Youth member when Mussolini signed that treaty. |

Yes, I am glad that is was blocked regardless of the stupid law still being in place.

That's the problem with being in a country that guarantees rights like free speech: we tend to assume everyone else in the world has or should have the same rights and values.
By the way, that bit about "fundamental human right to freedom of thought and expression"? Bull-puckey. It's pretty obvious that no rights are "fundamental" at all, nor universally shared.
