Well, as the hype was for not. Hype that Gustav would land as a category 5, when it made land fall it was a category 2. Thankfully the damage caused by it was not too extensive (no more so than to be expected by an average hurricane).

Hype? what hype? It was a hurricane aimed at N'Awlins and it was a hurricane when it came ashore... and it is STILL wreaking havoc as a tropical depression... with inches upon inches upon inches of rain falling in the same areas...

I chose to stay during Rita. My wife tried to get me to leave. She left with the kids to head up to Bryan / College Station.....she only got 5 miles away from the house after 5 hours and returned home. The eye passed to the east and we only suffered 50mph winds....with little rain. Only slight damage which warranted no insurance claims were suffered.

As one who has lived on or near the coast all of my life, it is incumbent on me to prepare for the lack of 'services' and the eventuality that food and water may not be available for extended amounts of time. I keep my pantry stocked with dry goods and water. I could last over a month should it be required.

I refuse to allow myself or my neighbors to become helpless victims in the event of such a situation. Though I am not in a crime ridden neighborhood, such events tend to bring out the worst in many. This is the essence of self responsibility and being a good neighbor. After all, I am better 'equipped' than most rural police departments.
