Default Pirates in Somalia

Quote:
(CNN) -- Pirates hijacked three ships off the coast of Somalia on Thursday in the "worst number of attacks" in one day in many years, an international maritime watchdog said.

"Four attacks in two days, ships being hijacked and crews being taken, and large ransoms being demanded is completely unacceptable," said Capt. Pottengal Mukudan of the International Maritime Bureau, which monitors shipping crime.

Pirates fired at a ship sailing under an Iranian flag and boarded it about 2:20 a.m. local time Thursday (10:20 p.m. ET Wednesday), said Noel Chong, head of the International Chamber of Commerce's Piracy Reporting Centre, a multinational coalition naval task force that monitors the region

This really shouldn't be all that much of a surprise since that area is known for pirating activity. Maybe the ships there should carry weapons in case they get approached next time IMO.

Worst part: Jack Sparrow was not around.

The pirates of romanticized lore were actually brutal Muslims. Is history repeating itself?

US Navy vessels of all sizes carry a small arms locker, and at least one MK.2, why not simply arm cargo ships? Think of the cost involved both in human life and dollars. A Glock 17 or Beretta Px4 will run $500 a copy, times the number of crew would be MAYBE $10,000 if you had a large crew. Throw in a few shotguns and rifles, and the total bill MIGHT be $15,000 to protect cargo worth MILLIONS of dollars. Plus, the crew aren't summarily killed, always a bonus.

If I had a shipping company, I'd invest in a small arms locker.

I was making a point that most people don't realize that the most feared pirates were the Muslims. They were also the slavers and the cause of America's first war after the Revolution. What Thomas Jefferson learned from the Muslim book of jihad

There have been a lot of attacks lately. If you remember earlier this year the Spanish Yacht captured, then the French Yacht and the Japanese Oil tanker that got attacked. Theyve been fighting a real war lately.
