I suppose this gets into a civil liberties issue. Where do you draw the line with YouTubing? Because there is an audience, a teenager sets up this sick video. What if he were denied an audience? Is this protected under freedom of speech? M
Teen Arrested for 'Cruelty to Child' Charge Former High School Teacher Who Reported Him Is 'Hero,' Say Police By SUSAN DONALDSON JAMES July 4, 2008 Link to complete article and video: ABC News: Mom's Nightmare: 'Baby Fly' Video SHARE The muffled cries of an 8-month-old baby end a chilling YouTube video that has shocked viewers and resulted in the arrest of a teenager who wanted to show the world how "a baby can fly." A teenager is arrested after Web video surfaces of him harming an 8-month-old. The 16-year-old Georgia boy was arrested this week for laying a baby on an inflatable pillow, then jumping on the edge of the pillow to launch the infant into the air and across the room. "Watching the video made me physically sick," said Col. Duane Sapp of the Lee County Sheriff's Office. "The baby landed on its face, which opens up a whole range of possible injuries to his neck, head and internally." Police arrested the Lee County High School teenager this week on a felony charge for cruelty to a child and another misdemeanor charge. He is being held in a youth detention center. He could face incarceration until the age of 21. The baby boy had been left in the care of the family of the teen who'd shot the video -- "Baby Fly" -- which has now been taken down from the YouTube site, according to the police. The teen who shot the video has not been charged. |

Yeah, and i was in a round about way asking a question. You seem to imply that youtube ought to be closed so as to prevent such people having an audience. Is this true or am i misrepresenting you?

Where do you draw the line with YouTubing?
Why can't you respond to the question without implying something about my motives. If you are saying that you don't draw the line, then how do you feel about a video showing abuse of a baby? Is baby abuse OK because it is freedom of expression? |

My position is perfectly clear, where as you are being entirely vague. Of course baby abuse is not okay. Such a suggestion is beyond absurd. I already said let people post what they want and if there is something illegal then let the law deal with them.

It depends on which came first. Did these kids only do this because it would be on YouTube, or were they doing it anyway and said "Hey, let's put it on YouTube" afterwards? People did stupid **** and videotaped it long before there was YouTube. The difference is now law enforcement can see them doing it and arrest them for it.

Saying that this kid did this because he could put it on Youtube is as idiotic as saying that someone murdered someone just because he had a gun or knife. Unless the kid is really ****ed up in the head, Youtube probably was not the cause for what he did, and if he was psychotic enough that Youtube "made him do it," that's no reason to prosecute Youtube.

Yes, it is convenient that he put it on YouTube. Now the entire court can play it back time after time at his trial. Maybe this kid needs psych treatment. I bet the father of that baby would like to kick his butt.
Reminds me of when the videocam was first getting popular. Then immediately they put on TV a kid arsonist filming burning down his neighbors house, two teens with paint guns and loaded doing drive by shootings of random strangers on the street and laughing at them, and then a group of teens breaking into a house and stealing. All of this ended up in court as evidence against them. Then previously on YouTube, there was an alleged US soldier throwing a kitten hard on the ground, and then -because the first video was popular- a video of an alleged soldier throwing a puppy hard on the ground. Did we ever hear about the authenticity of those tapes? |
