Unforetunately, it is not possible to always be watching a 6 year old and be close enough to react in time to stop something like this.

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

He shouldn't have got his hands on firecrackers to begin with!

The Forth is for the kids, you know, they light the fireworks while the adults sit and watch drinking wine.

I wouldn't give a kid as young as six a firecracker. Maybe a sparkler, outdoors with supervision, but not a firecracker. Fireworks are, in essence, colored explosives, and are in many ways more dangerous than guns. Now, shooting is a fun sport, but I wouldn't take a kid shooting until he/she was at least 10, though I'd start instilling safety at 5 or 6. Fireworks? Even later.

Would you give a six-year-old kid a bucket of black powder and a lighter? If not, why would you give him a firecracker?

Big difference between a bucket of black powder and a firecracker, on several levels. 1) the shear amount of explosives, 2) the safety involved, firecrackers are designed and made to be safe when placed on the ground and lite, a bucket is not.

But, yes I would trust a six year to light a firercracker and step away with the 5 or so seconds until it goest off.

Oh sure, just to light the fuse I'd trust him. But the implication here is that the kid had the firecracker on his own, unsupervised, and lit it off inside the house. I would not leave a firecracker in a place accessible to children if I knew there were six-year-olds about, any more than I would leave out my vz. 82. I wouldn't leave them unattended even if there weren't kids about, just on general safety principles.

Here in California the fourth of July firework shows were just shut down due to all the wild fires we have had recently. It made many people stop and question why do we need to associate Independence Day with fireworks.

On July 3, I had the experience of calling in a fire emergency and assisting fire fighters as a neighbor's house burned down near by. Not fun at all.

Are you aware of the firecracker shop near the New York border just east of Erie, PA?

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."
