Default A possible cure for cancer?

This could end up being gargantuan news, finally a breakthrough in finding a cure for cancer. You may want to keep checking out progress with this research. So far, the news has been exceptionally good. M

Scientists to test cancer 'cure' in mice on humans

Washington, June 29 : Scientists are all set to embark on human trials to test whether a new cancer treatment found effective in mice will be as good for humans.

The treatment involves transfusing white blood cells (WBCs) from select donors into patients in advanced stages of cancer, Wake Forest University scientists said in a statement.

The basis of the study is the scientists' discovery, published five years ago, of a cancer-resistant mouse and their subsequent finding that WBCs from that mouse and its offspring cured advanced cancers in 100 percent of ordinary laboratory mice.

The study, okayed by the US Food and Drug Administration, will involve treating human cancer patients with WBCs - - called granulocytes - from healthy young people whose immune systems produce cells with high levels of cancer-fighting activity.

They have since identified similar cancer-killing activity in the WBC of some healthy humans.

"In mice, we've been able to eradicate even highly aggressive forms of malignancy with extremely large tumours," said Zheng Cui, who led the research.

"Hopefully, we will see the same results in humans. Our laboratory studies indicate that this cancer-fighting ability is even stronger in healthy humans."

The team has tested human cancer-fighting cells from healthy donors against human cervical, prostate and breast cancer cells in the laboratory - with surprisingly good results.

Wow, this does have the potential to be a great breakthrough.

I am very interested in this research because it isn't just another pharmaceutical response to a health issue. It is working with natural immune factors. And it is something that can be streamlined onto the market, as this doesn't not need FDA and other extensive testing for drug safety.

Once we do get a cure maybe there's a chance we could move on to cure AIDS.

The same process may work on AIDs as it sounds like what they are doing is re establishing a healthy immune system by transplants a healthy persons white blood cell granulocytes.

If government and the pharmaceutical companies can't make money off of it then it isn't going anywhere!

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

If that starts to happen we will need public outrage to shut them up. It is too much of a major breakthrough to see the opportunity lost.

It sounds like the HMO's would profit from this first and foremost, as it is like getting a blood transfusion or blood glucose. HMO's have lobbyists just like the PharmCorps.

Woosh, that's the sound of all that science going over my head.

I share the same fears as Chan about its possible abuse from pahramacutical companies, or even them not pushing it through.

Then we will see other countries doing the pioneering procedures with this cure, a super rich and influential person will get cancer or their spouse or one of their kids will, and they will put pressure on all the legislators they have been donating $upport to.

I thought I would bump this cancer cure thread forward to circulate again with a new article. This is also a major breakthrough in cancer treatment.

Zapping Individual Cancer Cells
A new laser microscalpel used in surgery can target single cells
.

Engineers at the University of Texas at Austin have patented a laser microscalpel that allows a surgeon to operate on tissue one cell at a time, precisely targeting disease while leaving healthy surrounding cells alive.

The device combines two technologies--a femtosecond laser and two-photon fluorescence microscopy--into a single miniaturized, flexible probe. The probe can target single cells in three-dimensional space, penetrating up to 250 micrometers into tissue.

The probe could be a significant advance for endoscopic surgery that requires high precision, such as destroying cancer cells scattered throughout brain tissue or operating on delicate tissue like vocal cords without damaging them, says Adela Ben-Yakar, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.
