Default Argentina Remembers Her Greatest Son - Ernesto Che Guevara

His memory and ideas will live forever.

Quote:
AN international event in honor of Commander Ernesto Che Guevara on the 80th anniversary of his birth will take place in Rosario, Argentina, his native land.

The commemoration is sponsored by the municipal department of culture in this city, the third-largest in Argentina. The four children of Che and Aleida March de la Torre’s will be attending — Aleidita, Camilo, Celia and Ernesto — and will present the book Evocación, mi vida al lado del Che, (Evocation, my life at Che’s side) written by Aleida March and published in Cuba, Serbia, Spain, Japan, Italy and Portugal, as well as shortly in Brazil.

In Rosario, birthplace of the heroic guerilla, the first monument in his honor in Argentina will be dedicated in Parque Hipólito Irigoyen, an area which as of Saturday will be known as Plaza del Che, featuring a bronze sculpture by Andrés Zerneri, made out of pieces of metal collected in a unique campaign to gather small objects of this material.

In Havana, a political-cultural event will take place to pay tribute to Commander Ernesto Che Guevara on Friday, the eve of his 80th birthday.

During the gala, which will be broadcast on national television, a choral symphonic piece, "El cantar del caballero y su destino" by Maestro José María Vitier, will have its premiere. More than 4,000 Havana residents will participate in the tribute.

There are quite a few Argenteans who would doggedly dispute the "greatest son" label.

Even if they like Che.

In true recent new: Che's children are embarrased by the popular use of their father's image simply as a label for beer , t-shirts, and coffee mugs.

The Associated Press: s children

An interesting man, nonetheless.

Amen to that!

And it's not 'Argentina' that's honoring him; it's one city. The government of Argentina isn't sponsoring this shindig, just one municipality's government.

As for the 'greatest son' label, I'd be willing to bet that if you took a poll of all Argentinians they'd be more likely to vote for either Jorge Luis Borges or Juan Peron, maybe even Diego Maradona, before they voted for Che as their 'greatest son'. And if it were 'greatest child', Eva would likely win hands down.

I said "greatest son" not "favourite". If it were favourite, yes Maradonna would win, obviously. Favourite is a recognition of popularity, greatest is recognition of importannce, achievements and impact. So Che undoubtedly is the greatest, kicking a ball does not equate greatness, Che's words nad actions do.

I see your point but I still stand by my earlier post.

His importance globally is not the same as his importance within Argentina. That's not to say that many people there don't admire or even 'worship' him.
But the importance and impact of the other three men, and one woman, I named are, in my opinion, and I'd be willing to bet, a majority of Argentinians greater than that of Che.

For example, Jorge Luis Borges is arguably the greatest writer in all of Argentine history. He is the Argentine equivalent of Shakespeare for Britain or Tolstoy for Russia. EVERYONE there knows his work and many know his poems and short stories by heart. Not because they had to memorize them as school children, but because they love and respect him as a writer and icon of Argentina.

When he died virtually the entire nation mourned and the entire city of Buenos Aires was part of his funeral procession. The same thing happened for both Juan and Eva Peron (especially Eva). No such thing happened for Che.

As for Maradona, he helped the Argentine team win the world cup. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that. Che never helped Argentina win anything.

I think you're conflating his importance within Argentina with his importance to a global movement, therein lies your mistake.

He's an icon, yes. But Argentina's 'greatest son'? No.

I see what you're saying. But my point is not even that Arentinians think he is the greatest, but that he simply is the greatest whether Argentinians think so or not. I think globally he is recognised as Argentina's greatest export and who had the greatest impact on the world. The title of the thread seems to have caused confusion, but basically i was just saying that Argentina was recognising Che Guevara, who on the whole is viewed as the greatest ever Argentinian.

Yes, but as my comrade says "his memory and ideas will live forever" meaning after he's dead. How many other people can we say that about?
