One of the first things a Bostonian does when initiating a conversation is ask “what are you”, meaning ethnicity. This then forms the basis of assumptions that are made about you. If you don’t believe me go to a Boston-based forum and try starting a conversation as a “blank slate”.

With regards to "anti-intellectualism", that’s clearly not attributable to the South alone. Where do you think the classic “Bah-stin”, “New Yahk”, and “Connet-eh-kit” twang came from? They were a direct affront to the King’s English.

With regards to “red necks”, you’ve never experienced true red necks until you visit Upstate New York, north of the Adirondacks.
Pardon me, but like my uncle used to say, "What you don't know would fill volumes". I was born in Houston, Texas, but grew up in Chicago, Ill., West Side, and attended St. Mel Catholic High School, run by The Christian Brothers. I've been to New York, Washington, D.C., Baltimore...if that's Northeast enough for you.
And you've never experienced "red necks" until you've been to Pasadena, Texas or La Porte...they would eat yours for breakfast.

All cities are like this. I've lived in a lot of places. In St. Louis, assumptions are made about you based on whether you live in "North County" (black or white trash) "South County" (redneck), or "West County" (well-to-do) or by what high-school you attended.

I too lived in Massachusetts. There, the assumptions are typically about your ethnicity, not your race. If you're a "Southie," you're obviously descended from Irish stock & probably drink & fight a lot. If you're from Roxbury, you're obviously a black drug dealer. Etc.

As for the CURRENT state of anti-intellectualism, this absolutely has its genesis in Southern fundamentalist Christianity. To cite the anti-intellectualism of 225 years ago is, at best, disingenuous.

The superiority of Christianity, the fallibility of evolution, the Intellectual Design movement, "traditionalism" (women stay home with babies, blacks keep to themselves, gays are ostracized, etc.), and the general anti-intellectual streak that flavors it all (see codewords like "elitism," for example).

Oh, and things like, "You wear your X, I'll wear mine" with a picture of the stars & bars below it, the fight to fly the Confederate flag to celebrate heritage (it says a lot about a person who would celebrate the heritage of slavery & hatred), "The South's gonna do it again," and "Southern by the grace of God." These are all indicative of the "Southern mentality."

As I said, their is a strain of this everywhere. But it's not about racism. It's about economic class. Your ethnicity is generally (and obviously mistakenly) a barometer of where you fall in the social economic strata.
