Thumbs down VA Ordered Not to Diagnose PTSD

Quote:
This is an outrage.

CREW and VoteVets.org released an e-mail obtained from a Veterans Affairs (VA) employee directing VA staff to refrain from diagnosing soldiers and veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

On March 20, 2008 a VA hospital’s PTSD program coordinator sent the e-mail below to a number of VA employees, including psychologists, social workers, and a psychiatrist stating that due to an increased number of “compensation seeking veterans,” the staff should “refrain from giving a diagnosis of PTSD straight out” and they should “R/O [rule out] PTSD” and consider a diagnosis of “Adjustment Disorder” instead:
This is unconscionable. You can see a copy of the VA letter here: CREW and VoteVets release email telling VA staff to €œrefrain from giving a diagnosis of PTSD straight out€ | Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

Wow, when I see all the money being made off the Iraq war and then read articles like this, it is enough to make my blood boil. Yes, we definitely need to cut down on spending, but NOT at the expense of our veterans' mental and physical health.

This is an outrage. We are going into more debt to finance this stupid war in Iraq, with contractors making money like crazy, but we can't afford to take proper care of the troops who have fought this war?

Our priorities are really screwed up, if you ask me.

Are you suggesting that we should NOT take care of the troops service related medical problems?

I'm assuming that he is commenting on how care is rationed under socialized medicine because of the enormous costs.

This has nothing to do with socialized medicine. This is yet one more example of screwing the grunts. Republican values - ignore the problem long enough and leave it for someone else to fix.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is the driving force behind vet suicides, substance abuse, loss of jobs, loss of marriages and going homeless. We MUST stand by our vets and do what is right for them.

After hearing about the Pentagon guys showing up at hospitals to get bonus money back for re enlisted troops that have been seriously injured and the Walter Reed scandal, I think we are at a point beyond outrage. It is time to get even. FIRE EVERYONE INVOLVED in this latest BS.

Yet another example of how chickenhawks deskwarriors in Congress and in the white house preach down at us for stay the sacrifice while they have no one in their families or extended families and are sacrificing nothing at all themselves personally. In plain English, stay the sacrifice translates as "we need cannon fodder."

How about providing something from a valid source instead of a blog. For example, who wrote the letter and to whom was it written? Is the author of the letter in a position to dictate policy for the entire Veterans Administration healthcare system? Also, if there really is a greater amount of testing that should be done before determining whether someone has this so-called "disorder," and they don't have the time and resources to do the testing, then is it really good medical practice to give such a diagnosis?

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."
