Honorary degrees at Northwestern are awarded principally to those who have distinguished themselves in the fields of teaching, learning, research, writing, and performance in the arts. In limited numbers, however, those who have achieved distinction through their special contributions to society at large or more specifically to Northwestern University and its community are appropriate candidates.

Achievement or accomplishment of national or international significance should be the overriding criterion for all recipients, except those who are being honored for service to our community. A recipient should be one who will lend distinction to the University.

It's just a boring story about a university who agrees with everyone about a guy who's only famous because he knows a presidential candidate.

And that equates to 20 years of knowing him as a friend and as his mentor. Remember that the title of Obama's book was inspired by one of Wrights sermons. That is more than a mere acquaintance.

The university need to steer clear of the damage that Wright has caused.

And Obama, if the damage can be repaired. But now I bet Wright will come out with gloves on to bash him. This isn't over.

Violalee I undersatnd you point but like said, Obama knew him to well and waited to long out of respect or what ever. What he missed is this is politics and to win one has to be on top and that sometimes means being wise over being respectful.

The very notion of giving out honorary degrees is ridiculous but if some university wants to demean the value of the work students put into earning their degrees by rewarding honorary degrees to non-students that's their right. If a particular university wants to rescind its offer of a meaningless honorary degree to a particular individual, that university is free to do so and it is entirely fair because it is theirs to do with as they please.

More to the point, Insane McCain has SOUGHT OUT the endorsement of a vitriolic radical hate-monger who has said things which are much, much more extreme and frankly frightening than anything Rev. Wright has even hinted at. And now he calls this man his "spiritual advisor." Does that mean he's going to be taking advice from this maggot?

The "Blame America First" crowd? It's clear to me at least that must mean the cheap-labor conservatives. Does anybody happen to remember what Pusgut Jerry Falwell said--and Pat Robertson agreed with!--a couple of days after the World Trade Center came down? If not just go HERE.
