Default Gun Control, PC, and Pizza

PROTECT YOURSELF, GET SUSPENDED

No, I'd respect the workplace rules.
Man these stories just get my boxers in a bunch. A thug by the name of Kenneth Jimmerson called his local Pizza Hut in Des Moines, Iowa. James William Spiers, who has been delivering pizzas for ten years, makes the delivery. When James shows up to make the delivery, Kenneth puts a gun to his head and demands money.

So think about the different ways this scenario could play out. James could refuse and be shot in the head. James could give the guy the money and run and this thug could get away with armed robbery. James could give the guy the money and get shot anyway. Or James could pull out his own registered handgun, shoot the armed robber three times and get away with his life.

Thankfully James went with the last option. He had a valid handgun permit and used it at an appropriate time to protect himself when he had a gun pointed at his head. There is some bad news here. The predator survived his injuries. He does, however, face first-degree robbery charges. Perhaps he'll get a short sentence and when he gets out of jail he'll pull this stunt again and get killed for good this time.

So where does this story really turn sour? Pizza Hut has now suspended James William Spiers. And who knows if he will ever be able to return to work. The vice president of human resources at Pizza Hut says that employees are not allowed to carry guns "because we believe that that is the safest for everybody." Gawd, what a fool. Tell that to James, whose life was possibly saved because he chose to protect himself. Basically, what this woman at the Pizza Hut headquarters is saying that she would rather have had one of her employees shot (and possibly killed) rather than allow them to protect themselves. What an asinine train of thought.

Pizzas are fattening [here's a pdf of Pizza Hut's nutrition information, just for the heck of it]... forget Pizza Hut.

This is typical of the crazy mindset of Americans. I guess this HR person at Pizza Hut would rather mourn a dead employee than allow him to defend himself. Brilliant!
I'm still not over the cancellation of the policy that if they did not get the Pizza to you within 30 mins. it was free. Damned Pizza companies.

I delivered pizza for 2-3 years. I worked for a small business and if I was 21 I would have carried, many of my deliveries were to not so nice places. I am sure my bosses would have been fine with that, one of them is always carrying while at work. I think pizza hut has a stupid policy, as does the author. The driver made a good choice, but he should know the consequence of disobeying the company rules. For some reason have this irrational fear/hate of guns.

Joe dont you know that anyone who has a gun is a crazy person. Anyone that owns a gun is going to shoot up a buss full of nuns, old people, school kids and new born puppies just to watch them bleed.

I'm scared to post in this thread, but here we go.

I won't often support a large company, a bastion of capitalism, opressing its workers rights but well done pizza hut! Seriously, I don't want to collect my pizza and know that they guy delivering it has a gun in his pocket, maybe he see my computer, takes a fancy to it and holds me up in my own house. Having said that, given your constitution and the law on guns pizza hut is wrong and he should not be suspended.

I won't get a job at Pizza Hut to begin with, I'll eat there and that's it.

But of course if my job allowed for me to bring a gun then I will go with the "better safe than sorry" route. The people delivering won't see my weapon though and hopefully they won't have to.

The pizza guy is not going to rob you. That would be silly. He would have no reason to do that. You actually make a good amount of money working delivery. I made $12-13 hour. But, at time you can end up with over a grand in your pocket. But, the pizza guy most certainly get robbed. Thus it is very intelligent to carry a gun. When you walk into a store many times the owner is packing, you will never know it unless you try and rob him.

Gun control is always so touchy but I still stick to my "don't throw the baby out with the bath water" stance. If I need to protect my family from criminals or tyranny in my government I intend to be able to do so one way or the other. Keep in mind tyranny doesn't always come in the form of meticulously constructed grand conspiracies.

Tyranny can be as insignificant as one bad cop or federal agent to the masses but when one's life or freedom is at stake it becomes a completely new proposition entirely. Plus I like my stuff and I want to keep it, criminals don't buy guns legally anyway.

Be bold! But try to see the situation as the locals see it. It's necessary in the US to carry a firearm for personal protection, well in some areas. Americans do get - and I think rightly - annoyed when those of us from countries that don't have a strong culture of firearms ownership start to proclaim.

Anyway, Pizza Hut will no doubt be instructing its employees that it's not acceptable for them to be armed. Said employees can then either lump it or leave. Personally if I were delivering pizzas in some parts of the States, I'd carry two handguns and a lot of spare ammo.
