Default Venezuelans protest Chavez's new socialist push

The Associated Press: Venezuelans protest Chavezs new socialist push

Quote:
Chavez is imposing by decree some of the laws that were rejected by referendum just a few months ago

One decree establishes a civilian militia that critics warn could emulate the citizen groups that control many aspects of community life in Cuba. Another gives Chavez the ability to designate regional authorities who critics say could undermine the power of locally elected officials.

Other decrees empower Chavez to expropriate goods from private businesses and increase state control over food, punishing business owners who fail to comply with price controls or other regulations with fines, closure and even 10-year prison terms.

Chavez touted another law he said will strengthen the military by establishing regional zones headed by single commanders and bringing together army, air force, navy and National Guard forces. "It's a marvelous law," he said. "This is one single armed force."

No commentary?

Anyway... I don't think Chavez is taking after Cuba.

I think he's taking after Russia's Putin.

They should protest.

In either case he seems to be gathering more power unto himself.

I didn't comment on the OP because I felt the article spoke for itself

Excuse me for not believing the same media that constantly supports the Chavez fascist opposition responsible for an anti-democratic coup.

This "decree" was actually an interval of time that Chavez was allowed to approve such measures. It was voted on by the National Assembly. Last I checked, Chavez, like Bush, like almost ANY executive, is in charge of the military.

60% approval rating...

Jailing someone for crimes who happens to be of the opposition is not the same as "jailing the opposition."

Is it a crime to oppose him?
