Actually no, the issue must go by English law to have any legal effect, this and the various Jewish laws reagarding divorce mean that religious people can get a ruling that reflects their faith.

But can you not, regardless of faith, go into a contract with any stipulations so long as they all are within the confines of the law?

Yes, I suppose so, but the issues which the Lord Chief Justice is referring to can't be solved in such a way.

Right, but the religious things that he was refering to fall under what I said. You can sign into any contract so long as it doesn't break english law, so you can agree (a verbal or written contrat) to have your disputes settled in a religious manner.

The idea of legal effect has within it the notion of compulsion. If parties come to a consensus using a mediation mechanism whether it be Sharia or Halakah or an arm wrestle across the table in the pub then enforcement isn't required. The important point is that the consensus reached must be within the bounds of secular law. Phillips LCJ made that point clearly.
