Default Chavez defends candidate blacklist

Chavez's corruption has now extended to blacklisting opposition candidates from elections.

CARACAS, Venezuela—President Hugo Chavez defended Venezuela's top anti-corruption official on Tuesday for barring roughly 400 potential candidates—most from the opposition—from running in upcoming elections.
Chavez railed against his opponents for verbally attacking Comptroller General Clodosbaldo Russian, who has unveiled a blacklist prohibiting some of the opposition's most prominent leaders from participating in November state and municipal elections.

"I urge support for these dignified patriots heading state institutions, and special backing for the republic's comptroller general, Clodosbaldo Russian," said Chavez, speaking to soldiers and supporters during a military parade. "He makes decisions in accordance with the law and they attack him."

None of the potential candidates appearing on the list has been formally charged with a crime, but Russian says the law bars people from seeking office while facing corruption probes.

The list has prompted an outcry from critics who argue the ban is politically motivated and illegal. Opposition candidates on the list have led street protests and urged the Supreme Court to throw out Russian's list.

"The restrictions are aimed only at politically eliminating the candidates that clearly have the best chances of winning," said Alejandro Vivas of the opposition Copei Social Christian Party. "The restrictions are unconstitutional and antidemocratic."

What is your deal with Chavez?

Does he owe you money or something?

Did you have something to contribute to the thread or are you just trying to side track it away from once again exposing Chavez for the POS that he is?

Or he is in the oppositions payroll. But if he were they would be asking for their money back judging on the job he is doing.

Sure.

How's this?

Yes, corruption in Venezuela is a problem. Just like human rights abuses.

How is that different from most other nations in the region?

How is that any different from any other period in Venezuela's history?

Oh yeah, I forgot, you just don't like Chavez.

Do us a favor. Go learn about the rest of the region and you might see that while Chavez is by no means an angel, he's not as bad as you or FOX would like us to believe.

This reminds me of my Modern Middle East class where there was a kid (my former roommate, actually, unfortunately) who was so intolerable he wanted me to get up and rail against Palestine and support zionism to the max.

Yes, I disagree with plenty of what Chavez does, but this pointless trolling on the part of Bourne makes me want to defend his every action.
