Actually, it's completely relevant.

As with most 'developing' countries, Venezuela has a dependent economy. That is, it depends in large part for imports of manufactures and other goods from other, more developed countries. In this case, the US. The US is Venezuela's largest trading partner for both imports and exports. Since our economy is in decline, theirs is also hurting. And if the recession here gets worse, look for more of the same in countries like Venezuela.

However, with all the stupid crap Chavez has done, the economy HAS improved and diversified under his leadership. I'm not sayin I love the guy, but it's not as bad as you'd have us believe.
