Default Britain: EU agrees to freeze Iran bank's assets

At last some b*lls shown form our allies. Do you think this will show positive results or will Iran continue to behave improperly.

Britain: EU agrees to freeze Iran bank's assets 1 minute ago: More at the site

Britain: EU agrees to freeze Iran bank's assets - Yahoo! News

LONDON - A British official says European Union nations have agreed in principle to freeze the assets of Iran's largest bank.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown's spokesman, Michael Ellam, said Monday an agreement is in place over the assets of Bank Melli.

Ellam has said following talks in London between Brown and President Bush that all EU member states had agreed they should freeze the bank's assets.

Foreign ministers were meeting in Luxembourg on Monday and Iran was high on the agenda. European Union officials could not immediately confirm the plans.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

LONDON (AP) — Britain will freeze assets of Iran's largest bank in a further move to discourage the country from developing nuclear weapons, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Monday.

Brown, speaking at a news conference with President Bush, said Britain will work to persuade Europe to follow suit.

The British leader said that assets of Iran's Bank Melli would be frozen. Last year, the United States accused the bank of providing services to Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

"Action will start today in new phase of sanctions on oil and gas," Brown said. "We will take any necessary action so that Iran is aware of the choice it needs to make."

I can't give you more rep points for awhile, but I can say thank you for a good catch of a news story. We need to follow this because I would expect Iran to respond. Freezing assets sounds like a desperate measure, but all Iran needs to do is cooperate with inspections to confirm that they have no nuclear weapons development program. And that would have to include underground bunker protected facilities.

Haven't they already done that? Didn't we already confirm that they have shut down their nuclear program years ago?

Why should they have to do that? As long as we have a nuclear weapons program we are being hypocritical and should be treated as such, I would hate Iran to get nukes but ridding the world of nukes starts at home.

No new info has surfaced in the last months. Do you think Israel would announce in the open that they need to dump on Iran, without proof?

Thank you Michael, I'm in the same boat with the reps and following this story. I am sure we will see the threat from Israel and possibility our Air Force being forced to act.

But why are we taking actions against them? We have shown that they closed their nuclear program down and have no evidence that they've restarted it?
