Default George Galloway on Britain's Police State

This is full of ironies. I like the very last line the most - oh how times change.

Quote:
THE weekend's begging letter from the Prime Minister to Labour MPs, pleading with them not to vote against making Britain the world's worst place for detention without charge, was a sorry sight.

Did you think you'd live long enough to see our country top the league for locking people up without them knowing why?

And did you ever think it would be aso-called Labour government who would introduce it?

There was supposed to be a "Labour rebellion" against the 42 day proposal but like the Yeti, that's turning out to be a phantom of the imagination.

MPs such as Aberdeen's Frank Doran, my old solicitor, has been "persuaded" by the Home Secretary's eloquence to forget the eightcenturies old shibboleth of habeus corpus..in Britain if not in Zimbabwe.

Livingston's Jim Devine is another unable to resist; internment for Catholics in the north of Ireland, bad; internment for Muslims in Britain, good
- more Animal Farm than Parkhead's jungle. David Hamilton, the Midlothian Labour MP, is a former Communist and striking miner. He actually spent time in prison as a result of the 1984 epic battle against injustice and is another whom George Orwell couldn't have invented.

On the other hand the Tories are standing up for freedom.
John Major, the mouse who roared, treats us to a devastating critique of this counterproductive crazy campaign to shred our way of life.

Patrick Mercer, the former soldierturned-Tory front-bencher, who served in Northern Ireland throughout the troubles, tells us this proposal equals internment and will increase sympathy for terrorism and help recruit new terrorists.

Tories for liberty, Labour for the road to the police state. You couldn't make it up.
Orwell, you should be alive at this hour.

AS if Gordon Brown didn't have enough trouble to deal with, he has invited the swaggering Simian, George Dubya Bush to Downing Street for one last photo-call.

We in the Stop the War coalition will be there to provide suitable background music for this meeting of the war leaders.

Of course the next time Brown meets an American president it will likely be Barack Obama, who is odds-on for victory in November.

Did you ever think you would live long enough to see an American president who was an anti-war marcher shaking hands with a Labour Prime Minster who is widely believed to be a war criminal?

George Galloway is raging lunatic. He has never said a sensible, reasonable thing in his life. He is outrageous to get attention...like a blond woman I could name. S--W him and the horse he rode in on!

Any truth in what Galloway says is like a broken clock that is right twice a day. (Once a day if it is digital.) Bring on a credible critic.

Any text that has the phras "you couldn't make it up" alerts me to the liklihood that it has been made up. It is a favourite of Sun columists. Using the phrase seems to abdicate responsibility for providing any proof.

The PM is war criminal. Labour for the road to the police state. I know people would LIKE this to be true, but that is not the same as it being true.

Well has it been made up ? Are these Labour mp's not pushing for holding people 42 days without charge ? Are the mentioned tories not opposed ? He need not prove that which is common knowledge. To suggest otherwise is absurd.

I think you are confused to put it kindly. No one wants this to be true, but it is. No one wants to be represented by a war criminal, no one wants to live in a police state. Involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan maqkes it near obvious of the governments war crimes and 42 day internment looks suspiciously like the road to a police state. It is just a step off reaching the Thatcheer governments standards, a small step.

I'm sorry, what bit is not true, we invaded Iraq against international law, thus Blair and Brown are war criminals, we are holding people without charge for 42 days now, we are pushing for ID cards that everyone must carry and we have CCTV all around the country thus we are becoming a police state. Rizwaan Sabir a student at Nottingham University downloaded an al-Qaeda hand book, from a US government website no less, as part of his study for a Phd on radical Islamist groups. This he sent on to a staff member at the university who could use a printer for free to print off the document which was around 1,500 pages long. Both were arrested and detained for 6 days! I call a state that treats academics doing research as terrorists and detains them for almost a week with no evidence a police state, or one on the way at least, what do you call it?
