Default 3 Million Now Literate Thanks To Cuba

Having supplied more medical aid to the third world than the entire WHO, Cuba has now taught over 3 million poor non Cubans how to read and write.

Quote:
APPRECIATION for Cuba’s efforts to teach people how to read all over the world was expressed by international authorities at the Ibero-American Congress on Literacy and Education for Young People and Adults, which was being held in Havana.

lvaro Marchesi, general secretary of the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture, spoke to the efficiency of the Cuban literacy program "Yo sí puedo" (Yes, I Can), which has been used to teach 3.193 million citizens in 28 countries.

The official affirmed that it is the responsibility of those who have been able to study to contribute to educating others in order to eliminate social inequalities.

Ena Elsa Velázquez, Cuban minister of Education, expressed appreciation for holding the congress in Cuba and commented on the serious world situation, characterized by the existence of 774 million illiterate adults and young people and more than 72 million children without schooling.

She noted that, in response to this situation, Cuba has offered help in solidarity and without expecting anything in return, including its experience in teaching literacy, through the "Yo sí puedo" method, created in 2000 with a universal and contextualized approach that has been utilized in 15 versions.

FIDEL THANKED FOR YO SI PUEDO PROGRAM INITIATIVE

A message of thanks to Fidel Castro, the leader of the Cuban Revolution, for having promoted the "Yo sí puedo" program throughout the world, was sent by literacy program coordinators from countries that are part of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) bloc.

Representatives from those programs in Nicaragua, Bolivia and Venezuela described their experiences in literacy and post-literacy work. More than 1,000 delegates from 30 countries were attending the congress.

I know im surprised no one has came in with b-b-b-but they are dictatorship, they don't have freedom - like the freedom to go hungry, remain uneducated, ignorant and ill.

The solidarity Cuba has shown with the worlds poor while expecting nothing in return is simply unrivalled.

Raul Castro is loosening things up in Cuba, that's why the wingnuts will leave this alone. Cuba is still a poor nation but it's improving its position and while we keep hearing about the lack of consumer goods (*sob*) free education, free medical care and a lot of other social programmes have benefited the Cuban people in very real terms.

I'm on it.

Congratulations Cuba, congratulations socialism. This is the thing about socialism, it goes about it's business without fuss, without making a big song a dance about it like capitalism does when some philanthropy emerges. I'd bet most Americans and Brits don't know who helped fight against South Africa and who opposed apartheid whilst Britain and America were refusing to trade with Cuba but trading with racist South Africa. And then the arguments come that it's against freedom, but what is freedom if it can not be excersized? Plutarch wrote about Solon:

Quote:
The remission of debts was peculiar to Solon; it was his great means for confirming the citizens' liberty; for a mere law to give all men equal rights is but useless, if the poor must sacrfice those rights to their debts, and, in the very seats and sancturies of equality, the courts of justice, the offices of state, and the public discussions, be more than anywhere at the beck and bidding of the rich

Lets do. Like the most important of rights - the right to life, noit to die young from cureable disease because of wealth, like the right to a good education.

You wanna talk about human rights ? Lets talk. What about the rights of Iraqi's and Afghans not to be killed by foreign powers. Lets talk about the right not to be iomprisoned without trial - to be locked up in guantanamo or Abu Ghraib, lets talk about the British locking people up for 42 days without charge, lets talk about torture and extraordinary rendition.

You see when it comes to the most vital and cherished of human rights Cuba has the worlds "free" countries beat hands down.

Cuba is a poor country, of course some people will look to leave, that's a given. But Cuba was a poor country long before socialism, and it it has only remained poor die to external forces - like a $100 billion costing embargo and European sanctions. But wealth is not a measure of a nation, the measure of a nation is what they do with their wealth and what Cuba does with its is infinitely better than most. They don't start wars and spend lots on weapons, they build schools, give health care, fight racism, build housing, look after the elderly and infirmed. They are streets ahead of their regional rivals and all countries of similar resources. Their charity knows no limits - they give aid not based on ideology but based on need - if the worlds superpowers behaved like cuba there would be no war, no starvation, no ignorance, no poverty, no racism, no needless deaths, so yes indeed, go socialism.
