I assume the BNP is surfing in on an anti-immigrant sentiment?

Yeah, what else, just their usual brand of racism and hatred.

Maybe not bizarre behaviour, but they are bizarre things to say.

I wouldn't go that far, he won only by around 100,000 votes and that at a time when Labour are at a generational low with public opinion. The sad thing is the last mayor actually actually opposed most of his parties policies. He was against the Iraq war, against privatisation, a friend of Hugo Chavez, a critic of Israel and vocal supporter of Palestinian liberation, all things i woul;d have thought you agreed with. He was simply found guilty by association, because of the party he is a member of.

I see no reason why not. It would all depend on the powers that be in the party. Would they be willing to put a well known socialist up for a seat, particularly one who can't be trusted to follow the party line. He would almost certainly vote against the privatisation policies and often criticises the leadership. I doubt Brown and the cabinet would be keen on the idea. The rank n file though would certainly love to see him in the parliamentary party.
