I think you've pretty much summed it up. I think that is the short term effects, along with public spending cuts to come. In the long term it MAY spell a socialist revival within Labour, as New Labour is clearly a dying agenda. That may of course be wishful thinking.

The other thing it may cause is further nationalism in Scotland. The SNP would love nothing more than a tory government down south. They can blame them for underfunding and point out that they UK government is not representative of Scotland as virtually no Scot votes Tory. I am of course basing this on the assumption that the Tories will win the next election.

The only thing i can say, if that happens, don't be a student, don't be a pensioner, don't be a single parent, don't be an immigrant, don't have a dark colour of skin, don't be an invalid, don't be poor, as you will suffer.

So your saying is abandon my plan to emmigrate to the UK. Lol

Yeah man the last paragraph is completly correct, Tories only care for those who have money. Tony Ben was speaking here on the radio this morning and even he was saying that New Labour were no better than the tories and particulary criticised the 10p tax. You reckon Alex Salmond is happy then? When are the Scottish locals? How will the SNP do?

We had ours at thesame time as the Scottish Parliament elections. The SNP scraped a victory, but still don't control any councils. They will be loving the results today though. What they really would love is the Tories to win the General election, support for independance will skyrocket if that happens. The only thing that could stop that is a truly Socialist Labour, because the truth is the SNP are more socialist than Labour now and their victory can be attributed to the demise of the SSP, it was mainly all their voters that voted SNP last time and gave them victory.

Labour really need more people like Tony Benn and Galloway. Galloway was just talking about the 10p tax too, but he also mentioned tax credits, a good thing but terribly complicated, so complicated that only 1 in 5 of those eligible actually claim them. So the actual good policies of Labour aren't even gaining them popularity as people cant even understand them.

Another thing that Benn said was you have to distinguish between Labour and New Labour two entirely different parties. However in regards to the tax credist its no coincidence that it is complicated it means that those under the poverty line almost completly ignorant of their rights already would never have the resources to comprehend and claim what their entitled to. The 10p tax is a disgrace and so is theincreasing fees for students and almost making it harder for young people of the lower classes to go through Uni. Even here Fianna Fail (a centre right party) are more socialist. For instance theirs free uni here with grants our college fees are paid and depending on your economic situation you can be awarded up to €5000 in grants). If it was not for this policy mate I wouldnt be able to atend Uni without getting myself and my parents into terble debt.

It's the same in Scotland, i am always suspicious of the SNP (i always feel there are masonic elements within) but they at least prevent tuition fees unlike New Labour in England. But that said grants were long ago scrapped, you have to get a loan. I already owe 2 grand and that will just keep going up. The irony is that these so called socialists (in name only) like Blair and Brown all got grants and fees paid, yet they are the ones scrapping it for this generation.

On tax credits, even people with maths degrees have said they cant work it out. It's a farce. My sister got them when my niece was born, but they cocked up the payments and she had to pay them back money. And this is not unusual, the system even confuses those running it and so the people their meant to be helping end up greater financial difficulty when they have to pay back the government for their own cock up.

I don't really think we Scots can shout about oppression and imperialism, we're not Northern Ireland, we're not Palestine, we are as much to blame for the mess of Britain as anyone. I'm more of a workers of the world unite kind of guy. The English aren't our enemies, the English capitalists are, but so are the Scottish capitalists. The problem the world has is too many countries, not too few. All that said i always vote for nationalist parties, but not because of nationalism, rather in spite of it, just because they most socialist parties are also pro independance.

Bloody disappointing news to read on an Saturday morning. And Boris getting the Mayoralty of London just makes it that much worse.

Sod it.

Anyway, isn't Scotland pro-Labour? It was my understanding that Labour always did better in Scotland than England and Wales - is the SNP to the left or the right? Sorry about the compound questions.

That would normally be the case, but since New Labour aren't very Labour anymore things are changing. Most people now recognise the SNP as being to the left of Labour, i certainly do. I would say they are centre left with Labour centre, maybe even centre right. The SNP have 47 seats in the scottish parliament and Labour 46 - that being their worst results in Scotland in 40 years. Blair and Brown have simply destroyed the party.

Thanks for that info - time for a rebuilding then. It sounds like they're going to be driven out of office at the next general election - 2 years? - in which case Brown will be gone, I would assume most of the current cabinet would be gone as well. That is probably a good thing. Blair has destroyed Labour with his Third Way con job. Now Labour should closely examine itself, realise it is a fraud, Tory Lite as it were and start rebuilding itself on policy and not spin for public consumption. If they're going to be a socialist party then they bloody well should come out and say so and not lie to the public about it. A term of the Tories and the electorate should be ready for a return to Real Labour.
