Imagine if in Europe the word 'american' became to mean something else, whether or not that something else is positive, negative, or neutral, instead of 'someone from america' so that when you told someone you were an american, they thought of that something else rather than 'someone from america'? I'm sure that would get very frusterating after not too long.
