Olympics Hypocrisy Summed Up
This is what i have been saying for a long time. London better be prepared for the same treatment China has recieved because Iraq, Afghanistan and all the other crimes are far bigger reasons to protest than Tibet. And as the article says every major nation who hosts a sporting event better be prepared because the attack dogs have set a precedent to be followed.
Quote:
Let me make my own position clear. I think the Olympics are a wasteful, grandiose, corporate, nasty, nationalistic flag-waving parody of the whole idea of sporting excellence.
Take this farce of the Olympic Torch, which has so damaged China over the last weeks. This was invented by Adolf Hitler for the 1936 Berlin Games. He was into torchlight processions in a big way.
Now that protesters have discovered the public relations power of disrupting this farcical run-up to the games, no big power will ever be able to stage the Olympics again without every campaign jumping on the bandwagon.
Watch out for the hop, skip and jumps as we approach the London Games next time.
Protesters seeking reparations for British involvement in the slave trade, which cost the lives of millions. The countries of the cruelly exploited Empire, whose very lifeblood was sucked for the fattening of our own country's ruling class. Campaigners against Anglo-US wars in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan and wherever else we've invaded by then. Those outraged by the Balfour Declaration, in which Britain promised one people - the Zionists - the land of another people - the Palestinians - leading to Palestine's disappearance off the map and the scattering of its people to the four corners of the globe.
Irish protesters, anti-nuclear weapons protesters, animal rights protesters...
Now I have no problem with peaceful civil disobedience. It's a tactic I'm working on myself to place before the anti-war movement here.
What I can't stand are double standards. China is being attacked for its human rights record in countries which openly support, arm and train blood-soaked tyranies all over the world.
Attacked for not interfering enough, for example in Sudan, by governments and media in the west, when if China was a country which DID interfere in other peoples' affairs, she would be attacked for the very imperialism they themselves practise across the world.
China is being humiliated by governments who are never done abasing themselves trying to get their noses in the trough of China's booming economy - the fastest growing in the world.
There is a separatist movement in Tibet fighting against the return of the territory to the Chinese motherland. But there are separatist movements all over the world.
We only intervene in some of them. Those which happen to co-incidentally weaken our adversaries or strengthen our allies or serve a wider ideological purpose.
The others can go hang; and often do. That way we can support Kurdish separatism in Iraq and oppose it over the border in Turkey. We can support Albanian separatism in Yugoslavia, but oppose it in Macedonia. We support the Shiites in Iraq, while threatening war against the Shiite revolution in Iran.
We hate the Shiite power - Hezbollah - in Lebanon, but one day, mark my words, we'll be supporting Shiite separatist forces in eastern Saudi Arabia.
We will never support separatism in Spain, but we'll go to the brink - or even over it - to support separatism where it suits us.
There are only two principles which can help us here. One is the right of all nations to self-determination, which is not the same as saying every nation in the world has to form a separate state.
Multi-national states, and groups of states, are the way any sane world will develop.
We live in one ourselves. We should try to help others stay together. But language and other national characteristics should be cherished and allowed to flourish.
Where conflicts arise we should never be caught out discriminating in our approach on the unprincipled basis we are applying to China.
The second is that the modern Olympics has little to do with sport and much to do with business and rival nationalisms.

If there ever was in the history of humanity an enemy who was truly universal, an enemy whose acts and moves trouble the entire world, threaten the entire world, attack the entire world in any way or another, that real and really universal enemy is precisely Yankee imperialism
They talk about the failure of socialism but where is the success of capitalism in Africa, Asia and Latin America?
