Thumbs up Carter: Hamas very important for peace

Jimmy Carter is the MAN! Let's hope he will show the neo-cons how to do the job....

Former US president Jimmy Carter

Former US president Jimmy Carter underlines the importance of Hamas' inclusion into peace talks amid opposition from Washington and Israel.
Carter, who in his 2006 book likened Israeli policies to 'a system of apartheid', described the inclusion as 'very important' because it helps us hear the views of Hamas leaders.

"There's no doubt in anyone's mind that, if Israel is ever going to find peace with justice concerning the relationship with their next-door neighbors, the Palestinians, that Hamas will have to be included in the process," he said in an interview with ABC, which was pre-recorded and aired on Sunday.
The former US president arrived in Israel on Sunday as part of a nine-day trip to the Middle East in order to study the situation for peace talks.

"We'll be meeting with the Syrians, the Egyptians, the Jordanians, the Saudi Arabians, and with the whole gamut of people who might have to play a crucial role in any future peace agreement that involves the Middle East," Carter said of his trip.
Carter is to be shunned in Israel by senior Israeli officials including premier Ehud Olmert, foreign minister Tzipi Livni and war minister Ehud Barak. Israeli officials have cited 'scheduling problems' as the reason.

"I've not confirmed our itinerary yet for the Syrian visit, but it's likely that I will be meeting with the Hamas leaders," Carter said in the interview.

On Thursday, the US State Department had also advised Carter against meeting with Hamas officials.

I'm tempted to say "well duhh", but it's good to see a former American president saying it.

A good book but they really went all out to demonize Carter for telling the truth about the situation. If the US government doesn't like it, it has to be the truth and the facts.

And Jimmy Carter has to have some kind of evil agenda for being a man of peace? Duhhh!

Hamas has already stated they do not recognize Israel; will not negotiate with Israel; and advocates the destruction of Israel.
As I have stated before, Hamas does not want peace. If there is peace, it will lose political power and money.
That is the reason it wants nothing to do with Fatah, and the West Bank.
You are mistaken to think otherwise.

UShaditComing, you know.... now I begin to unterstand why Jimmy Carter was always rediculed and laughted at by the GOP people and the so-called "Conservatives" - they just don't like his message, they don't want peace in the Middle East.

Perpetual war in the Middle East brings huge profits to oil companies and other American corporations. So, naturally, American oil companies and their political arm GOP use every opportunity to ridicule a legacy of a man who did so much to start a peace process and a dialog between Arab countries and Israel.

And today's events, such as war in Iraq, actually prove that everlasting war in the Middle East is GOOD FOR THE AMERICAN CORPORATIONS.

What's the point in arguing with someone who is propagandized to the extent that he is so full of hate that he can't even consider that he is wrong? Nothing exists in your brain on which a bridge could be built.

That is true, UShaditComing. However, while most Americans are brainwashed to such extent that they cannot even express their own thoughts, they still can wake up and see the real picture.

All we have to do is continue to broadcast the same message...

Carter wants US talks with Hamas

AIRPORT CITY, Israel - Former President Jimmy Carter said he hoped to help open talks between Hamas and U.S. leaders, saying Washington's policy of not meeting with people it labeled terrorists was counterproductive.

State Department spokesman Tom Casey told reporters that the U.S. has "made clear our views that we did not think now is the moment for him or anyone to be talking with Hamas."
Casey said any meeting with Hamas officials is "something we've counseled against. But he is a private citizen, and it certainly is his decision."
Carter brokered Israel's historic peace accord with Egypt in 1979, the first treaty it signed with an Arab country. But he has been unpopular in Israel since publishing a book two years ago drawing comparisons between Israeli policies in the West Bank and Gaza and apartheid in South Africa.

In an interview with the Israeli daily Haaretz published Monday, Carter said he intended to use the Mashaal meeting to press for the return of three Israeli soldiers captured by Hamas and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia. He said he would also try to get Hamas to accept a pan-Arab plan for peace with Israel.
