U.S. orders Belarus to close its embassy as diplomatic row escalates
The U.S. has ordered Belarus to close its embassy in Washington and its consulate in New York. The U.S. also says it will shut down its embassy in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, in the latest escalation of the diplomatic row. The AP news agency quotes officials as saying that Belarus has been given until May 16 to withdraw its six diplomats and that the American embassy in Minsk will cease operations as early as Friday. Washington is one of the fiercest critics of Belarus's authoritarian regime and is putting pressure on the eastern European state to release political prisoners or face punitive sanctions.
