Default What do you think?

Today in my Spanish class, I challenged my Puerto Rican nationalist (thats what I consider her) teacher who basically hates America.
NO SHES NOT LIBERAL, shes just sort of racist and weird about Ameircans.

She insists that we use "Nueva York" or maybe its "Nueve"--I don't know, I don't pay attention in Spanish (I HATE it)

So anyway, I said "Why can't we just use 'New York' seeing as thats what its real name is" and she went off on this whole "because you need to respect the Spanish language" speech and got pissed.

So then I said "Well, when were talking about a Spanish country, do Americans translate the city of that country into English or do we respect their language?"
i.e. Buenos Aires, San Juan, Lima ect..

Those are all Spanish words, and Americans pronounce them as Spanish words.

Why cant spanish people pronounce New York as "New York"

????????????????

Sounds like she has some issues.... I would refer to it as New York because that is the name of the damn state/city.

She may have some issues, or she may just be trying to get you to use more Spanish words since it is Spanish class, after all. I wouldn't push it since she is the one who will be grading you.

Puerto Rican nationalist telling you that is not surprising. Just tell her She's an American.. that'll piss her off.

I agree with Lumara. It is a Spanish class after all, why not use Spanish ?

They talk about the failure of socialism but where is the success of capitalism in Africa, Asia and Latin America?

Because that's what's "done." Nobody decided it was going to be that way, it's just how it is referred in Spanish. I mean, they'll probably understand you if you say "New York," but her job is to teach you Spanish, so you should learn to say it how Spanish speaking people say it, which is usually "Nueva York."

Nueve York would be "Nine York."

Fwiw, we do say things differently: Dominican Republic? In Spanish that's La Republica Dominicana.

Btw, you should pay attention in Spanish class.

(If you want to talk about.. heehee... Puerto Rican nationals, on the other hand, that's another story. :D )

It is a proper name though... It is spanish class but if you are referring to a proper name then it should be addressed by its proper name. I do not refer to Rio de Janeiro as "River of January" because that is what it means in english.

It's all about convention. Some things you do one way, some things you do another, with little rhyme or reason.

That's how language is.
