Default Sarkozy and Fillon push on

Quote:
French PM Francois Fillon has said the government will press ahead with President Nicolas Sarkozy's reform plan despite setbacks in local elections.
Partial results from Sunday's first round put Mr Sarkozy's ruling UMP conservative party at 45.5%, with the opposition socialists at 47%.

The vote is seen as a test of Mr Sarkozy's first year in office. His popularity has fallen in recent months.

But the socialists' lead is smaller than some analysts have predicted.

The decisive second round run-offs are to be held on 16 March, and the outcome - particularly in several large cities - remains finely balanced.

Some 44 million French voters are choosing mayors and local councillors in about 37,000 cities, towns and villages.
BBC NEWS | World | Europe | Sarkozy's reforms 'to go ahead'

Despite the unpopularity gained by some of Sarkozy's reforms Fillon is pushing them through but they risk losing votes, Sarkozy's approval rating reached 67% in July last year but now two thirds disagree with his policies. I'm just hoping Sarkozy and Fillon can continue to alienate the voters and give the socialists a chance to gain.

Sarkozy is a divisive charachter, reminds me of a male Thatcher. I would take great pleasure in seeing his party defeated.

They talk about the failure of socialism but where is the success of capitalism in Africa, Asia and Latin America?

Yes, completely agree, haven't experienced Thatcher myself but I always think of him as a French-Thatcher.

Same here, Major is as far back as my memory goes. But from historical analysis alone, it's easy to see her as pure evil.

Yep, that too. I left that out so as not to seem brainwashed into hatred, since i so often accuse others of it
