Phil Valentine, a local talk-show host and twice-a-week columnist for Nashville's daily newspaper, The Tennessean, has authored a wake-up call to those who remain oblivious to some politicians' intent to ensure the steady flow of illegals across our southern border. The article begins:

"It seems like forever we've been consumed with the high gas prices. This run-up in energy costs has diverted our attention away from other pressing issues that need addressing, but we can't seem to take our eyes off the pump.

"Politicians are counting on that. U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., is quietly sponsoring a couple of bills in Congress that would extend federal wildlife protection to about 84,000 acres along the U.S.-Mexico border at Coronado National Forest. This would effectively move the border 30 miles to the north. It would also effectively create a safe haven for drug runners and coyotes. ...

"Rep. Grijalva is offering his legislation under the guise of protecting the environment, but it's clear what his intentions are. He's attempting to facilitate illegal immigration now that the Border Patrol has stepped up its enforcement."

Valentine briefly touches upon the taboo subject of some Mexicans' belief that the southwestern portion of the US is really Mexican territory, illegally seized by America; and that it must be reclaimed, one way or another:

"[Phoenix talk-show host Darrell] Ankarlo...brings the 'Reconquista' movement to the forefront in this book [Another Man's Sombrero]. Although proponents of illegal immigration deny it, there is a popular mindset in Mexico that the Southwest United States somehow belongs to them. There is a hushed but concerted effort to take that land back by overwhelming it with illegal immigrants. This is something we can no longer afford to ignore."

Most Democratic politicians view building the border fence as a violation of the voting rights act, i.e. trying to keep all of the those, future Democratic voters, illegals out.

I believe--and admittedly, I cannot prove this--that many Democrats wish to promote voting by illegals, since a majority will surely vote Democratic. Some states, from California to Maryland, are already experimenting with allowing non-citizens to vote, at least in local elections; it is not such a great leap for these (and other) states to turn a blind eye when illegals vote in congressional, senatorial, and presidential elections also.

I do believe that our immigration process should be streamlined, to the greatest extent possible without our compromising our national security or accepting those who have no apparent desire to assimmilate into American culture. However, to claim (as some Democrats may) that the enforcement of our borders--and, by extension, the protection of our national integrity--is somehow a violation of the Voting Rights Act, seems transparently disingenuous.

Who needs a fence when you have the North American Free Trade Agreement joining us at the hips. Too much money exchanging hands to really think it's a priority. Say hello to the new world.

Deploy the 4th ID to the border, give them very liberal ROE, and in less than a year the illegal immigration problem will be solved.

Except that most illegals are not sneaking across the border, they are getting temp visas and not going home when they expire. A border fence (or border army) is only a small part of the needed solution.

I don't think that any Democratic politician would actually claim that building the border fence is a violation of the Voting Rights Act. What people, that say that about the Democratic politicians, are actually just trying to point out is the overly blatant hispandering of the Democratic politicians.
