It's nothing more than speculation but interesting nonetheless. My response: round 'em all up and deport them! Send the Welfare bums in to replace them.

I think society would adjust, eventually. In fact, not only would opportunities become "available" for welfare recipents, but we have a huge, idle prison population perfectly capable of picking crops.

Things would probably suck for about ten years, until programs got established that dealt with the transition. Prices on certain things probably would skyrocket.

It would require a fairly substantial committment to government and business regulation...(and I can already sense the reaction to that!)

I have heard talk about providing a sort of "amnesty" to those already here, but maintaining their status as a sort of permanent underclass/non-citizens.

Correction: farmers and supermarkets would make the conscious choice to raise prices.

It's stupid to talk of prices as doing things (rising and falling) magically all by themselves as you have done. There are real people making real decisions. Let's knock off this crap of making it seem as if no one's to blame for rising prices.

Sure, let them stay but don't let them ever become citizens? I can't accept that. Round 'em up and boot 'em out of the country; if they want to return they need to do it legally.

I think the issue is more about having to pay Americans what Americans feel they deserve, as opposed to the $5/day or whatever they toss at the immigrant workers now.

I'm fairly certain that those costs would indeed be passed on to the consumer. I doubt ConAgra or whoever would be pleased about their hit to the budget, when their whole business is predicated on low-cost field labor.

(Now, people with illegal Mexican maids and gardners can suck it up, I'm not worried about them losing their slaves at all. Boo-hoo.)

I saw a Horsey cartoon from the Seattle newspaper of a family in front of their mansion with four feet tall grass and weeds (no Illegal for mowing lawns), dishes piled up around the sink (no illegal dishwasher) the laundry piled up (no illegal laundry aide).

Just getting rid of all illegal immigrants if that were possible would result in a gargantuan bill for the law enforcement services, a large percentage would come right back over our non secure border, and in the meantime, we would be paying extreme prices for produce and feel the crunch of suddenly not having unskilled labor willing to work or less than normal survival wages.
