These are the kinds of things that businessmen understand. You hit them in the wallet and they will pay attention. It is not our duty to supplement poor nations. We have our own set of problems at home. It would be like Dr. Phil having 4 ex wives and then wanting to help someone with marriage advice.

Like I said, if you want to come into this country then earn your rights. Find a job, stay in contact with Immigration and work on getting your Green Card. I know it is expensive but the blood, sweat and tears should be worth it if you are willing to cross illegally and live your life looking over your shoulder. This is the land of opportunity, you should give something back for being given the opportunity.

VERY well put, there. IMHO, you're absolutely right.

10k isnt enough of a deterrent. I think it should be 10 times that, at the same time make sure that they have ways to verify that documents given to them are legit.

Rather than make it a fixed fine, make it proportional to that company's annual income. Like, for instance, for every undocumented worker they hire, garnishee 10% of their income for that year. Then, for every ten undocumented workers they have, they lose all their income and go bankrupt. I bet if that got passed, they'd fire all their illegal workers pretty damned fast.

Of course, as long as there's Republican influence in the government, that won't get passed, because that would stop the steady flow of dough into their pockets from generous gifts by certain corporations.

That's the status quo policy. Big corporations and wealthy people like it that way.

A steady supply of illegal immigrants is the policy. The policy is designed to facilitate this result.

And going into effect on February 1st 2008 will be the layoffs of all clerks in the department responsible for administering it. By the end of the year, they will have a thousand cases backlogged and no convictions.

That's when they will conclude that they can't actually enforce the law and officially stop trying.

But if any voter accuses them of doing nothing, they can point to this tough piece of legislation (that won't be enforced).

Amazing how this game works eh?

Takes a lot of effort to build up that many illegal immigrants. 10-20 million people just don't sneak in overnight.

Yes, I suppose $10,000 fine is too small since that is less than the difference between hiring a proper wage legal full time maid or gardener vs an illegal one.

As such, a $10,000 fine for such illegal labor would be considered only a 'tax' on the illegal labor (or a cost of business).

On this basis, the fine has to exceed the material value of the product. In this case, the annual value of a minimum wage employee (whatever that is).

Update: A federal judge has just refused to overturn or delay the Arizona law that is scheduled to go into effect on New Year's Day. Here is the a link to the story: Judge rejects delay of employer sanctions law | EastValleyTribune.com
