Sen Baucus, a tax writer in the Senate -- albeit w/ his own motives and own stimulus package he's promoting -- says his tax experts are telling him the House-passed measure's rebate structure is IMMENSELY complicated.
So -- will Americans be able to easily figure out if they qualify for this rebate? Easily get the rebate IF they do qualify??

Fox News has learned that illegal immigrants are eligible for $300 to $600 rebates promised in the bipartisan, economic stimulus package. The plan was approved by an overwhelming supermajority today on the House floor.
Some illegal immigrants pay taxes. They may not be U.S. citizens. But they are assigned Individual Taxpayer Indentification Number (ITIN) which enables them to file. Thus, if they file taxes, they are eligible for a rebate check.
For these purposes, illegal immigrants are those who quality as "Resident Aliens" are eligible. Resident aliens are those who spend a "substantial" amount of time in the U.S. and have not been deported.
Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) said that the bill will certainly stimulate "more illegal immigration."
Opponents of the illegal immigrant eligibility provision point out that the House considered the bill under "suspension of the rules." Suspension provisions allow the House to expedite bills and don't open them up to the usual amending process.

IF THEY CAN FIND THEM TO GIVE THEM THEIR "TAX REBATE" CHECK...THEY CAN FIND THEM TO DEPORT THEM, AND THEN PUNISH THEIR EMPLOYERS!!!!

I don't know much about "Resident Alien" status. Is it like a Guest Worker program. I need to hear more about this from various sources before I get excited.

United States Permanent Resident Card - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They are not illegal immigrants, they are legal immigrants holding green cards for work and meeting requirements to keep the cards. They pay taxes like the rest of us.

A resident alien is NOT illegal.

They are legal and hold green cards. They pay taxes.

Illegal aliens are NOT resident aliens.

of course - and don't forget that Tancredo is THE most anti-immigration congressman out there. For him to distort the facts to make people rise up isn't surprising at all.

Of course the illegals ought to be eligible for tax rebates - because they paid the taxes in the first place.

If you want to prevent illegals from getting tax rebates, maybe you ought to stop forcing them to pay taxes in the first place?

Besides, the 'tax rebate' game is not a 'reward' for American citizens. It is an economic stimulus plan. It is like dumping money out the window of an airplane. It doesn't matter who gets the money as long as they turn around and spend it.

But hey, why talk about a plan to stimulate the economy when one can posture about the evils of brown people instead?
