Default A little bit of Iran..

Would Americans be so vocal about attacking Iran if they knew what the US had done to them in the past?

They HAD a Democratically elected government over 50 years ago. In an often repeated scenario, all they wanted was their oil money for themselves rather than being sent overseas to keep foreigners well fed. What they got in return was regime change and a brutal dictator in the shah.

Please watch this short history lesson on Iran.

In all fairness, I don't think that Americans in general are terribly vocal about attacking Iran at the moment.

Quite true. Indeed, the majority of the military command staff have expressed opposition to taking military action against Iran. Much easier to isolate and contain Iran's ambitions than to confront them.

I brought up the coup in another thread. The poster i was debating with just claimed the US had no involvement i showed a BBC article which of course said it did. But then i was told the BBC was "left wing" and "alternative" and that only US sources are reliable That is the level of ignorance we are dealing with. So no matter how good the intentions of this thread, people will ultimately cast it aside - although at least its an American source you use, but no doubt "left wing" and "alternative", so of no importance.

Yeah, the last thing we need right now is yet another colonial war.

for those who refuse to believe, NO source is ever good enough.

BUT, here's some suggested reading for those with the time:

"All the Shah's Men - An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror" by Stephen Kinzer

this is a full-length treatment of the entire situation surrounding the coup and its aftermath which was published in 2003.

I highly recommend it, even for your 'no US involvement' person.

Would Americans be so quick to want to bomb Iran if they knew that the people of Iran dislike their government as much as we dislike our own right now? The people of Iran love American music and movies and culture. The students of Iran are trying to have a revolution but are constantly being crushed. The students of Iran can't even by their favorite CDs anymore. They are completely censored since Ahmadinijad took over. I know these things from personal experience of cooresponding with people from Iran.

To bad they didnt use that strategy in Iraq.
We would be much better off today if we had.

Iran is not a threat. Iraq fought them for a long time and nobody won.

We defeated Iraqs military in 2 weeks. I think Irans military would fall as fast but like Iraq we would then have years of insurgancy.

The answer is not war.
