As I'm in here and as a Scot, I would like to mention the enormous list of Scots below8)
This is just for interest. Sometimes you find a lot of Scottish achievements are mistaken as English. These people have contributed a lot to world culture but I accept some are there for entertainment value, not really suitable for the "greatest" people list: Lord Reith,Engineer, Broadcasting Pioneer, first Director General of the BBC (you all thought the BBC was created by an English person8)) Andrew Carnegie, businessman, iron and steel magnate and philanthropist who also impacted on the US (Madonna’s wedding was held in the house he built here in Scotland) Adam Smith, the father of capitalism (see, you all thought it was the USA who invented it) John Paul Jones, father of the American Navy? Lord Thomas Cochrane, South American naval liberator, Admiral, adventurer. (Horatio Hornblower novels are based on him). Sir Fitzroy MacLean, WWII war hero, James Bond is based on his escapades Sean Connery, actor, obviously. While we’re on actors, Ewen MacGregor (think Star Wars). David Niven, the actor. You DEFINITELY had him down as English. OK, Billy Connolly, comedian and actor, as well then… ![]() Now seriously: John Logie Baird, registered inventor of the first TV Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone Alexander Fleming invented penicillin Sir William Arrol, first suspension bridge Major General Sir Thomas Mackdougall Brisbane, Brisbane city in Australia named after him Sir James Barrie, writer of Peter Pan and other literature John Buchan, poet and writer and Governor-General of Canada Sir Ralph Alexander Cochrane, Air Chief Marshall of the Royal Air Force, commanded the Dambusters Raid of bouncing bomb fame(bet you all thought it was an Englishman) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who created Sherlock Holmes James VI, first King of both Scotland and England (you thought the first crowned monarch to rule over both Scotland and England would be English too, admit it )Sir Alexander MacKenzie…became a fur trader in Canada, MacKenzie River is named for him (MacKenzie is my own name as it happens). Charles MacKintosh…you’ve guessed it, the raincoat inventor Allan Pinkerton…formed first US detective agency Alexander Selkirk…castaway…”Robinson Crusoe” is based on his story Pocahontas is based on another Scot’s story Robert Louis Stevenson wrote “Treasure Island” amongst other things... Captain Kidd…every pirate you’ve ever seen is based on him and his hidden treasure The Queen Mother, mother of the current Queen, was Scottish as was Princess Margaret, born in Glamis Castle in Scotland. I'll stop there. Congrats if you're still reading, I thought some people might enjoy. |

Historically speaking, this was a non-event, hardly worthy of notice.
It was a big hollywood movie though... Have you, like studied military history? I guess not. I doubt if Julius would be worthy of a spot on a top ten greatest generals of all time list. As a man though, I'm not much of a fan of Julius. Could you give me something that Julius Caeser did that makes him so admirable? Huh? Please cite just one example of one admirable thing Claudius is known for. I wouldn't put Claudius in a list of the Top Ten Best Roman Emperors! Quote:

Charismatic certainly, and damn fine general (not a great one, just a good one) but to say that he cared about his people is a joke. Richard hated England and barely ever even bothered to set foot there. He loved only his beloved Aquitaine that he inherited from his mother. England was just a property to taxed or pawned to pay for his needs. Btw, Richard Lionheart is one of England's most famous 'homosexual' Kings. They had quite a few of them in the early days. Quote:
Great man? I think not. Quote:
That's not my definition of a great man in history. Quote:
Damn near started WW3 during his Korean debacle. Not exactly the kind of thing I'd praise. Watch it boy. You can really make some people angry with bull**************** like this. Read up on Ghandi. He was a hard-core racist. Yes he led a pacifist uprising against the Brits which is admirable. But a racist he was and racist he remained to his dying days. Now, about that accusation of retarded? Bite me. (This is a polite as I can get here - I'm not known for mincing words when I'm insulted like this). Once you include Tupac, your list becomes silly, unserious and easy to mock. Might as well include Brittney Spears and the Beach Boys too. |

Why are so many Scots so fanatically nationalist to the point of absurdity? It is rather an unpleasant trait. Given your opening, I didn't bother to read the rest. |

![]() Just a bit of fun...I have nothing against the English at all. They have been very good allies to us. But it is true that they are given credit for a lot more than they have actually achieved. They have also carried the blame for questionable activities of course. The US has produced many great people, they are more than covered here by the "kids" There are few Europeans here, I posted to balance that out and I am happy with that decision.I am happy to see Guernica's entry. He was a great man, but look at his hair, man ![]() ![]() So the Huguenots went through a great deal over history, religious persecution and so on. If you have any knowledge, I'd be interested to hear about that. |

I am not going to start with this, way too much for no return, but Whitey, everyone in the world calls him Richard the Lionheart except for you. Claudius is widely recognised for his achievements, Julius Caesar the same... Ghandi was a shining example of pacifism. Of course he wasn't keen on the English...but who could blame him under the circumstances? Anyway, I think that list was worth posting. |
