Default Love Canal's 30th Anniversary

I grew up in Niagara Falls, NY and was there during the whole Love Canal thing. I have to wonder, though, if Lois Gibbs isn't maybe trying to keep the controversy alive by denying all the work that was done to clean up the mess. For those of you who don't know your environmental history, Love Canal was largely responsible for starting the move toward cleaning up toxic waste sites through the Superfund.

Lois Gibbs returns to Love Canal, calls state's health study a 'whitewash' : Home : The Buffalo News

NIAGARA FALLS -- Lois Gibbs returned to Love Canal today with a message similar to ones she has delivered there many times before.
On the 30th anniversary of the state of New York's declaring a state of emergency at the former toxic waste dump, Gibbs blasted the state Department of Health's latest study on former residents.

Gibbs called the study the department's "final whitewash."

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

As I was thinking about the article and the commentary I heard on the radio earlier today, I came up with an idea: annual Love Canal parties.

Local taverns would have these Love Canal parties; the theme, of course, being Love Canal's toxic waste. They could have theme drinks like Love Canal sludge (Turkish coffee with a shot of bourbon), the Lois Gibbs 30th anniversary wine (a white whine, er um I mean wine with a few "teardrops" of water), the Al Gore Love Canal finder (where the drinker has to guess the alcohol in the drink; if you don't understand that one, Al Gore claims to have found Love Canal Have we ever used the words "liar" before? Today we do, of the Washington Times. Political Gossip: Heard on the Street:Al Gore did not say those things, but we think he did - just focus on his statement that he "found" Love Canal and not how the media took it out of context), and so on...

Lois Gibbs claims there are still 20,000 tons of toxic waste buried at the site - out of the original 21,000. Yet the EPA and others have hailed the cleanup at Love Canal a success story. Cleaning up only 1,000 tons of toxic waste and then letting people re-build a neighborhood on the site doesn't sound like success to me.

Didn't Al Gore discover Love Canal? or was it that he was the subject of the movie.. Love Story? or did he discover the 'canal' while being the subject of the 'story'? I could never figure all of that out.. with the discovery of the Internet and the founder of this company that will sell you a carbon credit....

my head is spinning.. How many Kilowatt hours of electricity did Al Gore consume last year? How many is he now telling the rest of us to consume?

This Al is getting quite Boring..

Don't you know that the purpose of government bureaucracies is to protect the bureaucracy first.. and make sure that it has eternal life. It will do whatever is necessary to make certain that it continues... despite its success, despite its failure ... despite anything.

NOTE: Public sector companies fail if they are not successful at their mission.. When they fail, the cease to exist.. When it comes to government, there is only eternal life... nobody cares if it is huge failure.

Hey Chan, until I read this, I didn't realize you were a party kind of guy! It's a fun idea.
