Claim: Government?s Proposed Wild Horse Euthanization Not Necessary | Newsweek Animals and Pets | Newsweek.com
From the article's first paragraph: After surviving the ice age, the industrial revolution and the slaughterhouse, America's wild horse population is facing a new threat: the U.S. government. The Bureau of Land Management announced this week that it is considering euthanizing wild horses to curb the population on the range and in federal holding facilities. There are an estimated 33,000 wild horses living in 10 Western states, and another 30,000 living in government corrals. The BLM is billing euthanasia as a way to cope with looming budget cuts, while still maintaining the mustang as a living symbol of the American West. But critics say that the herds have already been thinned to the edge of extinction with periodic roundups and auctions. A century ago, there were around 2 million wild horses roaming the West; now the BLM wants to cut that population to 27,000.

A panda walks into a cafe. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air. "Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder. "I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up." The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation. "Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves." I guess our government want's to control more than just the people of this country, they want to control every living thing in the land (and probably the world).

I don't think it would even be wise for me to get started on this one! The adopting idea (auctioning) was a good idea, I know quite a few people who have adopted mustangs and they are phenominal horses, I hope to adopt a few in my life, but now they just want to euthanize them? Why? I've heard dabbles into this, and for a while they we're just going to castrate a percentage of the stallions to minimize reproductivity.
This just frustrates me! GRRRRR!!!! I had a grand idea, and if only I had the money I would start it up. I want to build a barn specially designed to train mustangs (as they are very good horses, but they do present certain qualitys that other horses don't have that make them difficult to gentle) and then I would adopt 5 or 10 of them, gentle them and get them going to a sufficiant starting spot for any riding discipline then sell them. Why is this different you ask? I truly believe that a lot of the horse world out there would like to be able to own, ride and have such a great partnership with an American Mustang! However, the problem is that most people do not posess the time, means, nor PATIENCE to train a mustang. The average horse can take 1-4 months to be gentled, depending on how often you work with the animal and what breed it is, and for what purpose your training it for. Mustangs? I've heard it can take anywhere from 6 months to a year to train a mustang. I've heard months alone just to touch it! But it's so worth it! Mustange are amazingly trustworthy, VERY easy to keep as they grew up haveing to survive on the plains and deserts of Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, and such, and they can do almost any discipline! This is all just sad.... ![]()

This is bullsh*t and total mismanagement right here. Its sad and pathetic that these things happen but its worse that no one in the Land Management Bureau cares. What a terrible solution.
