I agree totally. Especially the one-way trip part. There is no way I'd be the one taking this little excursion. Between the dangers that we know about, we have the unknown that we don't. Too much has to be absolutely perfect for someone to be get there in one piece and then have a capsule to return home in. I'll go the 100th trip, but not the first.

Ah, if only The Romantics could safely hook up with China...in terms of the space race they would leave The West in the dust.

Russia will have the first manned mission to Mars. However, their plans are to remain in orbit above the planet - not to attempt a landing.

The US is going for the entire ball of wax - which means we will be 6 yrs +/- behind.

Lazarus, where can I read about US plan?
I went to NASA site, but didn't find an article that would clearly state what NASA's plans are.
There are some articles but I could open them....

From NASA site:

Fall 2030: launch manned mission to Mars. Spring 2031 ııı Summer 2032: Mars surface
exploration. Summer 2032: leave Mars surface and depart for Earth. ...

Are you sure about that? Wasn't the Saturn V 1st stage motors the largest so far? As I recall there were 5 in the first stage. In contrast the Russian motors are less powerful individually, but they use more of them per stage.
