Russia will have the first manned mission to Mars. However, their plans are to remain in orbit above the planet - not to attempt a landing.
The US is going for the entire ball of wax - which means we will be 6 yrs +/- behind. |

Are you sure about that? Wasn't the Saturn V 1st stage motors the largest so far? As I recall there were 5 in the first stage. In contrast the Russian motors are less powerful individually, but they use more of them per stage.
