Default Morales : Capitalism Harming The Planet

I totally agree with President Morales. Capitalism eats up resources in search of profits, it is a catalyst for climate change.

Quote:
Bolivian President Evo Morales has told a UN forum that capitalism should be scrapped if the planet is to be saved from the effects of climate change.

"If we want to save our planet earth, we have a duty to put an end to the capitalist system," he said.

Opening an UN meeting in New York on the rights of indigenous people, he also said the development of biofuels harmed the world's poorest people.

The forum's theme is the global impact of climate change on native people.

Mr Morales gave the keynote address at the opening of the seventh session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

As a descendent of the Aymara people, he is Bolivia's first indigenous president.

Bolivia's left-wing president said unbridled industrial development was responsible for the pillaging of natural resources.

Speaking through an interpreter at the UN headquarters in New York, he had this uncompromising message: "If we want to save our planet earth, to save life, to save mankind, we have a duty to put an end to the capitalist system."

Mr Morales also argued against biofuels, crops which are used to produce alternative energy rather than food.

Biofuels resulted in poverty and hunger he said, and were very harmful to the poorest people in the world.

In a side swipe at Brazil, major manufacturers of the biofuel ethanol, he said some presidents were putting cars ahead of people.

The forum is scheduled to run until 2 May.

And all other government/economies do not harm the environment? No. It isnt capitalism or any specific economy.

Society as a whole, and human nature, and advancement/progress is the real root of the problem. We all (in every country) want to accelerate and advance to live better lives, be the most powerful, whatever, but in so doing we will always sacrafice the environment to our will to grow beyond our limits. We need to SLOW DOWN, and stop expanding everything so fast. Every year if a thousand people need to make a thousand new products and make a thousand new factories, or clear a million acres of trees...or clear out more forest for farmland to feed our overpopulated planet---that is what is destroying the environment.

Capitalism promotes expansion and growth as a means of survival...so i could see why that would cause one to think this way...but other types have done the same. Unless the entire society of the world were to be unanimously changed and controlled, then this inevitable clash between humanity and nature is always going to occur.

Resources are over consumed by the capitalists pushing for profit. A command economy can prevent this. Capitalism never will.

I'm not 100% sold on this.

Let's not confuse capitalism with consumerism. One can have a modest capitalist system with good regulation that does help control spending because public funds are poured into social projects.

It's wealth that produces consumers - and what you're saying with your words is that capitalist countries are wealthier. Pro-capitalists will jump on that as evidence that socialism is a failure economically (conveniently ignoring controls that wealthy countries place on poorer ones regardless of eithers economic system).

Consumerism, fueled by poorly regulated corporate interests (which do generate wealth) is rampant. There's a few good books about this "Affluenza" is what it is dubbed.

You really think China is a Communist country?

Does anyone remember the widespread ecological wastelands found in eastern europe after liberation in the late 1980s? And the huge tracts of land made permanently unihabitable by Chernobyl - was that due to capitalism?

No, it was due to fascism.
